THE ANCIENT ART OF ARCHERY

The ancient Egyptians did it. Robin Hood was known for it. It was even used in South Africa for hundreds of years. Not everybody used it for the same purpose though, for the Egyptians it was a weapon, for South Africa’s indigenous people it was a hunting tool.

Today, people still use bows and arrows to hunt, but for Capt Louan Groenewald, archery is his favourite sport. And he is good at it. He took up the sport in 2002. A mere year later he finished 84th in the world championships. Today he is ranked 47th on the Fédération Internationale de Tir à l’Arc (FITA) World Rankings.

Louan has provincial and national colours in indoor, field and outdoor target archery. “I concentrate on outdoor target archery. I only use the other two for practise,” he said, while shooting one arrow after the other right on target. “Indoor target archery”, he explained, “is like outdoor target archery, but it is done indoors and the arrows are shot from 18m. It is a lot closer to the target, but then the target face is also much smaller.”

According to Louan, archery can be a family sport, with children as young as five years taking up the bow. In other countries, such as the USA and Korea, archery is a professional sport and very popular. There you would find some other archery disciplines as well, such as ski, run, and flight archery. Especially the ski archery would be a bit difficult to do in South Africa, as quite a large amount of snow is required for this discipline.

While he aims another arrow at the target face, the image of Robin Hood comes to mind. And the mythical Mr Hood would have been proud to hear that modern archers actually have a Fellowship of Robin Hood. You can only become part of this prestigious group if you can shoot one arrow straight into another. Louan said he actually managed this achievement once, but nowadays it is even more difficult owing to the fabric that the arrows are made of.

Louan is practising hard to fulfil two dreams next year. The first is to qualify for the World Championships in Germany. If he succeeds, it will be his third world championships. In outdoor target archery, 144 arrows are shot in the first round from 90, 70, 50 and 30 meters for men and 70, 60, 50 and 30 meters for women.

Louan says, most archers prefer the field target archery as it is more relaxing and offers more variety. Field target archery consists of a course with different targets that you have to shoot from different ranges and distances. Archery is growing as a sport in South Africa. Louan still remembers how popular it was in the 1970s when his father was a provincial archer. It seems that enthusiasm for the sport tampered down a bit, but it is now flaring up again.

He has already represented South Africa in the championships held in New York in 2003 and the competition held in Spain in 2005. His second dream for 2007 is to compete as part of the SAPS team in the World Police and Fire Games to be held in Australia. Currently, the SAPS do not have an official archery club.
